The first Android Hackathon in Brussels took place on Sunday, 13 December 2009 in the office building of The Creative Stores that generously sponsored the location, food and drinks.
The event attracked 18 developers and interested people – remember it was 10 am and sundays. After an introduction about GTUG and Android by Friedger as the manager of the Brussels GTUG and Jurgen as the CTO of The Creative Stores it became clear that this day should be used to control a PTZ video camera (Network Dome IP camera) with an Android device.
The group divided into two groups. One started immediately to study the protocol and features of the video camera and to prototype the application. The second group set up their laptops and were introduced to Android with the hello world example to get a feeling about mobile programming.
At lunch, everybody meet again to have a delicious hot dog or two. The break was not too long, the application details have been specified quickly and new tasks distributed, so that in the end after nearly 8h coding the final application was tested. Please see the images and video below to judge yourself.
The planned pool contest was nearly cancled as everybody wanted to hack more code than play pool and talk to the opponent. However, a few programmer decided to socialize. The best player was rewarded with a voucher for a dinner for two in a nearby restaurant.
More prizes were to win, as Sony Ericsson and Archos sponsored an Android device: a Xperia X10 voucher and a Archos 5 tablet voucher! The lucky winner were choosen by random.org. Before everyone left, The Creative Stores gave away a nice shirt for every participant.
It looks like everyone left in a good mood with a running (but not perfect) application on the device and more knowledge about Android in his head – everyone at his level.
